How BEAM NOTE works.

Everything the extension does, in the order you meet it: install and sign in, the panel, element pins, keyword triggers, attachments, sharing, your plan, and your data.

Getting started

Two minutes from install to your first pinned comment.

  1. Add BEAM NOTE to Chrome. Use the Add to browser button on beamnoteapp.com. It installs like any Chrome extension; nothing else to download.
  2. Sign in. Click the BEAM NOTE icon in Chrome's toolbar. Choose Continue with Email or Continue with Google, or Sign Up if you are new. Signing in is required: your notes are tied to your account so they follow you to your other devices.
  3. Open any web page. A small dark BEAMNOTE pill appears at the bottom-right corner. Click it, or press Alt + H, to open the panel.
  4. Pin your first comment. In the panel press Pin To Element, click anything on the page, type your comment, and send it. That is the whole product. The rest of this page is detail.

Every feature is free for the first 7 days after you create your account. After that, BEAM NOTE is $14.99 a month. See Trial, plan and billing.

The panel and the pill

The pill is the door. The panel is where everything on the current page is listed.

The pill

The BEAMNOTE pill sits at the bottom-right of every page. Click it to open or close the panel. Alt + H does the same from the keyboard.

The panel, top to bottom

  • Header. The logo, then two sliders: Matrix Mode and Notes On, then a close button.
  • Pin To Element. The counter of pins on this page. It doubles as the button that starts a new pin.
  • Pins on this page. Every pin on the page you are looking at, each with a Find button that scrolls the page to the element.
  • Keyword triggers. Your keywords, with the ones firing on this page marked.
  • Search. Search pins and keywords… finds any note you have written, on any page, and jumps to it.
  • Tabs. Keywords and Pins at the bottom switch the list.

The panel is drawn at true size no matter what zoom level the page is at, so it never grows or shrinks with the site you are on.

Element pins

A comment attached to one element on one page: an order line, a price, a photo, a paragraph.

Pin a comment

  1. Open the panel and press Pin To Element (or the + next to Pins on this page). The cursor becomes a crosshair and elements light up as you move over them.
  2. Click the element you want. A red box snaps around it with a numbered badge at its corner.
  3. The composer opens in the middle of the screen. Type your comment. The toolbar gives you bold, italic, bulleted list, strikethrough, underline and links, plus Add image and Attach file.
  4. Press the send button (it turns orange once there is text) or hit Enter. Press Esc or the back arrow to cancel.

The comment appears as a white card beside the element, joined to it by a red laser line. The pin is now part of that page: scroll away, reload, close the tab, come back next week, and it is still on that element.

What the colours mean

MarkerMeaning
Red box, red line, red badgeAn element pin on this page
Amber box, amber line, amber badgeA keyword trigger firing on this page
Badge reading Shared K1A keyword someone shared with you

When the page changes

BEAM NOTE remembers the element several ways at once, not just where it was. If the element moves down the page, the pin moves with it. If the page is rebuilt and the element is still there, BEAM NOTE finds it again and quietly refreshes what it remembers. If the element is gone, your comment is not: it stays in the panel under Pins on this page, and you can still read it, reply to it, or delete it.

Delete a pin

Open the card's ⋯ menu and choose Delete pin, or use the delete control in the panel's list. Deleting is immediate and permanent. There is no trash.

Keyword triggers

A comment attached to a word instead of a page. It fires on any page, on any site, where that word appears.

Set a keyword trigger

  1. Open the panel and press the + next to Keyword triggers. The cursor becomes a crosshair.
  2. Click the element that contains the word: a part number, a seller name, an address, a ticket id. BEAM NOTE pulls the words out of it and shows them as chips.
  3. Click the chip you want, or type the keyword yourself in the Keyword… field.
  4. Write the comment that should appear with it, attach anything you like, and press Save keyword.

How it fires

From then on, whenever that word appears on a page you open, whether it is search results, an order history, a supplier chat or a spreadsheet view, an amber box snaps around the word and a laser line runs to your comment card. One keyword, every mention, every site. The panel's Keyword triggers list shows which of your keywords are firing on the current page.

Pins and keywords are different tools. A pin stays on one element on one page. A keyword follows the word wherever it goes.

Delete a keyword

Open its card's ⋯ menu and choose Delete keyword, or delete it from the panel's list. It stops firing everywhere at once.

Comment cards and replies

The white card beside the element is where you read, reply and edit.

  • Reply. Type in the Reply… field at the bottom of the card. Replies stack under the original comment and can carry their own images and files.
  • Edit. The ⋯ menu on any comment or reply offers Edit, Add image, Attach file and Delete.
  • Move it. Drag the card anywhere on the page. It stays out of the way of the panel on its own.
  • Long content wraps. A wide picture or a long word never widens the card or adds a sideways scroll; it wraps to fit.
  • Find the element. Every pin in the panel has a Find button that scrolls the page to it.

Images and files

A note can carry the real document, not a link to it.

Attach

In the composer or from a card's ⋯ menu, use Add image for pictures and Attach file for anything else: PDF, Excel, Word, CSV, and more. Each comment or reply can hold up to 3 images and 3 files.

Size limits

PlanPer-file limit
Free trial (first 7 days)10 MB per file
Pro ($14.99 / month)200 MB per file

Preview in the page

Click an attachment to open it right there, over the page. Images, PDFs, Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx), Word documents (.docx), CSV and TSV tables, video and audio all preview inside BEAM NOTE. Anything else opens as a download.

Attachments sync with the note, so a PDF you pinned on your desktop opens on your laptop too.

Notes on and off

Hide everything without deleting anything.

Flip the Notes On slider in the panel header, or the Notes are on switch in the toolbar popup. Every box, line and card disappears from every page until you flip it back. Nothing is removed; your notes are still stored and still syncing.

Sharing

Let one other person see the notes you leave on a page or on a whole site.

Share

  1. Open the panel on the page you want to share and press Share (the popup's Share button opens the same view).
  2. Enter the person's email address.
  3. Choose what they get: Page (this exact page) or Site (every page on this website).
  4. Choose how long: 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or 1 year. Press Send invite.

They receive an email with an Accept button. Until they accept, the share is listed as "has not accepted yet". Once they do, your notes, pins and keyword triggers on that page or site appear on their machine, marked as shared, including anything you publish afterwards.

End a share

Press End Share next to their name. Everything you shared leaves their device.

Shared with you

Notes someone shared with you show a Shared badge on their markers and are listed under Shared with you in the popup. They are theirs: you can read them, and they go away when the share ends.

Before a shared note is published, BEAM NOTE asks you to confirm. Once it is sent to someone else's machine there is no unpublish, only End Share.

Matrix Mode

A theme, and a small joke.

Flip the Matrix Mode slider in the panel header, or simply type the word matrix on any page (not inside a text field). The note card turns green on black and the page's elements rain characters. Flip it again, or type the word again, to go back.

Trial, plan and billing

One plan, one price, everything included.

  • Free trial. Every feature works for 7 days from the day you create your account. No card is asked for.
  • Countdown. As the trial nears its end, a line inside your notes tells you how many days are left.
  • When it ends. The panel shows "Your trial ended" with a Subscribe button. Your notes are kept; they come back the moment you subscribe.
  • Pro. $14.99 a month, billed by Stripe. Subscribe from beamnoteapp.com/plans or the Manage plan button in the popup.
  • Manage or cancel. Manage subscription on the plans page opens your Stripe customer portal: invoices, card, and cancel. If you have no subscription it says so.

Your data and privacy

The short version. The full policy is at beamnoteapp.com/privacy.

  • Your notes are yours. Nothing you write is posted to the website you are looking at. Your notes are saved in your BEAMNOTE account.
  • Where they live. In your BEAM NOTE account, so they sync to your other signed-in devices. Attachments are stored with the note.
  • What is stored. Your email, your note text and formatting, your keywords, the short piece of page text a pin is attached to, the page address each note belongs to, timestamps, and your attachments. If you share, the email you invited and what you shared.
  • Crash reports never contain note content or full page addresses.
  • Questions or a data request: support@beamnoteapp.com.

FAQ

Short answers to the questions we get.

Does the website I am on know I left a note?

No. The note is drawn by the extension on your screen. The website is not changed and receives nothing.

Will the pin still be there after the page reloads?

Yes. A pin is attached to the element, not to your scroll position or your session. Reload, close the tab, restart Chrome: it is still there. If the site rebuilds the page, BEAM NOTE looks for the element again and re-attaches.

What is the difference between a pin and a keyword?

A pin lives on one element on one page. A keyword lives on a word and fires on every page where that word appears, on any site.

Can I use it without an account?

No. Sign in with email or Google. Your account is what carries your notes to your other devices and keeps them if you reinstall.

What happens when my free trial ends?

The panel shows "Your trial ended" with a Subscribe button. Your notes are kept and reappear when you subscribe. Pro is $14.99 a month.

How do I see my notes on another computer?

Install BEAM NOTE there and sign in with the same account. Everything syncs.

How big can an attachment be?

10 MB per file during the trial, 200 MB per file on Pro. Up to 3 images and 3 files per comment or reply.

How do I hide the notes for a while?

Flip the Notes On slider in the panel header or the switch in the popup. Everything hides; nothing is deleted.

Can I get a deleted note back?

No. Deleting a pin, keyword or reply is immediate and permanent, so BEAM NOTE asks nothing twice: be sure before you delete.

Does it work in Firefox or Edge?

Chrome only for now.

Why is the panel the same size when I zoom the page?

By design. The panel and the cards are drawn at true size regardless of Chrome's zoom, so they never balloon on a zoomed-in site.

Support
